knitted creatures

Knitted creatures spotted in Nairn

For anyone heading to Nairn, keep a look out for knitted residents in the Harbour and Links areas! Nairn Wool Shop staff and volunteers yarn bombed the area with knitted creatures and colourful bunting in celebration of the World Orienteering Championships that is currently being held in Highlands of Scotland (31st July – 8th August). The pieces are fantastically creative and fun to happen across when out walking, and really brighten up the area. My favourite is the honey bee 🙂 I hope they all survive the rain we have been having lately! Congrats to everyone involved!

Basic steps to website creation

Website design and development

Website design and development

We were recently asked ‘what do I need to get a website up and running?’ In response, we compiled the basic steps to website creation, which we thought we would share with our blog readers:

  1. Register a domain name. You need to choose and register a domain name. The domain name points to the address on the Web server where your website is hosted. You also need to choose domain extensions e.g. .com, co.uk, .uk, depending on your target audience.
  2. Choose a Web hosting option. The website requires to be hosted (or stored) on a Web server. The website designer/developer can usually arrange suitable Web hosting. See our Internet Services page for more information on web hosting and domain name registration and renewal.
  3. Website design and build. We would usually recommend a content managed website with a responsive design, giving you the control to manage the content within your website and ensuring it reads well across desktop, tablet and mobile devices. See our Website Design & Development page for more detail on web hosting and domain name registration and renewal.
  4. Create content. It is important to write/create good content and to optimise that content for search engine optimisation (SEO). SEO refers to the process of improving the position of your website in organic search results e.g. by Google. See our SEO blog category for tips.
  5. Google Analytics (optional). We would usually recommending adding Google Analytics, which is the industry standard in web analytics. It is a free service that generates detailed statistics about the visitors to a website, e.g. how visitors arrived at your site and how they use your site etc.

Of course, there are many more factors to consider, such as promoting your business online and trading online (eCommerce). Lanetech offers a full website design and development service. Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss a new website or a redesign.

Pre-order your .uk now!

.uk domain

At 08:00hrs on 10 June (2014), a new domain name will become available — .uk

The change follows in the footsteps of other countries such as France (.fr) and Germany (.de). The main benefits are: building trust — according to Nominet, 81% of people prefer .uk domains when searching or buying online; and a shorter, snappier domain name that puts focus on the website name. Existing domains such as co.uk and org.uk will continue to operate as they’ve done before. Registering a .uk version of your existing domain name will ensure that another individual or business doesn’t eventually nab it!

Please do get in touch if you are a Lanetech customer and would like to pre-order (or order) a .uk domain. In the meantime, our web services provider has produced the following helpful information about .uks:

Key dates

  • The reservation period for existing customers who already have a .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, .ltd.uk or .plc.uk runs up until 07:59hrs on 10 June 2019.
  • Domains registered before 23.59hrs on 28 October will have rights to the equivalent new .uk domain, provided there was no other corresponding .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .ltd.uk, .plc.uk or .net.uk registered.
  • All .co.uk domains registered after 28 October 2013 and before the new .uk domains are launched will also have rights to the .uk equivalent, as long as there is no clash with any existing domains in the following situations: Where there are two or more domains with the same website name, the .co.uk will be offered the .uk equivalent. Where there is no .co.uk, the .org.uk will be offered the new .uk equivalent. Where there is no .co.uk or .org.uk the .me.uk will be offered the new .uk equivalent.

Right to reserve

  • New registrations of .co.uk domains made before 08:00hrs on 10 June 2014 (provided that no other equivalent .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk, ltd.uk or .plc.uk exists) will get the rights to the new .uk domain.
  • After launch on 10 June 2014 any new registrations within the .uk family (e.g. in .co.uk, .org.uk etc.) no longer get automatic rights to register the new .uk domain. So these new .uk domains become available for anyone to register.
  • Anyone wanting a new .uk domain, where there are no existing domains with rights, will simply be able to register the new .uk domain.
